Enchanters Thrust the Very Rocks From the Ground

Necronomicon Enchanter: Earthe and Mer Magic

Within the pages of the Necronomicon Enchanter book in Lita’s library, the curious may learn the Enchanters’ magical matters. Beware, for the knowledge might drive the reader mad with bitter desire and luscious regret.

Because the Enchanters of Sye take the diluted magic of their world and concentrate it for human use, they organize magical abilities into five categories. Four categories favor ambient Sye magic. The last category represents all non-Enchanter magic, primarily spells by the Church, plus unclaimed and forbidden magic.

Earthe Enchanter

Earthe Enchanter

Earthe

Enchanters that practice Earthe magic specialize in two aspects. The first specialty is the steady and abiding enchantments of rock and soil. These Enchanters use their powerful magical essence to sculpt stone into dwellings, and re-arrange the nature of fields to favor specific crops. Earthe mages can make the very rocks thrust up and out of the ground, and create rings of standing stones.

The second Earthe aspect favors the magic of plants, and the quick enchantments of land animals. These Enchanters delight in crop production, forest health, and cultivating flower beauty.

The Earthe mages in the Enchanter school at Halow oversee the essence creation process of the Old Forest trees. All Enchanters eat this tree essence, which causes profound thaumaturgical changes in their bodies. Enchanters generate human magical essence from the natural enchantments of the Old Forest trees.

Mer Enchanter

Mer Enchanter

Mer

The Mer Enchanters enjoy water spells. Mer magic also has two aspects. The first specialty is the quick effervescence of fresh water found on land, such as streams, lakes, and rain. These Enchanters can divert floods, change the course of a river, and construct dazzling fountains.

The second Mer aspect favors the deep power of saltwater seas. Mer specialists can summon marine life, turn the course of ocean currents, and influence storms over open water. These Enchanters can coax fish into fishermen’s nets, and divert destructive surf away from homes.

Necronomicon Enchanter: Sye’s Magic Today

Within the pages of the Necronomicon Enchanter book in Lita’s library, the curious may learn the Enchanters’ magical matters. Beware, for the knowledge might drive the reader mad with bitter desire and luscious regret.

The sensual Enchanters and moralistic Church magicians share an uneasy interdependence in Sye today. The Enchanters’ ability to create essence has grown until they are the most powerful magicians in Sye.

Church magicians’ craft has also grown. The Sciomancers’ magical care of ghosts and afterlife matters are a strong counterpart to the Enchanters’ earthy pursuits.

Tensions have escalated since the current head Church magician, His Divine, took office. Early in his tenure, His Divine enacted the élite Enforcers.

By weaving spells to find the Uslar rings that only Enchanters wore, Church Enforcer Magicians used harsh measures to steal Enchanter essence. Enforcer persecution included harassment, kidnapping, and torture. Early Enforcers penetrated the Healer’s School and sabotaged one of the foundation spells. The ten Enchanter Grandmasters were able to correct the damage. To prevent other opportunistic Enforcers from entering the schools disguised as students, the Enchanters stopped teaching secular magic craft such as charm making, and spells that produce fire, water, wind, or soil.

After banishing the Magic Guild and Church magicians from the five schools, the Enchanters created myriad personal protection charms to thwart Enforcer magic when the Enchanters were outside the school walls. In a drastic measure to protect the fragile Enchanter spells, the Grandmasters forbade all but Enchanter Consents from entering the schools.

The Magic Guild is the go-between for the Enchanters and the Church. Only a quarter of the guild magicians have Enchanter Consent. The rest see to the magical dealings of the Merchant Guild and other non-Enchanter magical interests. Some non-magical guild members have Enchanter Consent, and these people must wear an insignia on their guild uniform that identifies their relationship with the Enchanters.

The Enchanters’ Magical Discipline

The ten enclave magicians learned from the sentient Old Forest how to prepare and consume the rich magical essence. According to the Old Forest’s instructions, they consumed tree essence five times a day for twenty-five days.

The essence glut irrevocably changed the mages’ bodies, their lives, and Sye. Their health became robust. Skin blemishes, stature, weight, and physical endurance improved significantly. The magical essence made them physically attractive, especially their eyes. Memory, the ability to learn complex spells, and the intuitiveness to construct elaborate magical mechanisms blossomed. Their intelligence and literacy also increased.

An Enchanter's Magical Essence Charm

An Enchanter’s Magical Essence Charm

The Enchanters’ bodies transformed the unpalatable tree magic into magical essence that non-Enchanter magicians could readily use. The ten magicians named their emerging craft the Enchanters’ Magical Discipline.

They created charms to store and deliver their essence. The ten Enchanters distributed hundreds of these charms to travelers who carried them to far-away towns. Some Enchanters left the enclave and established homes in the larger towns where they spread rich magical essence to anyone who wanted to taste its enchantment.

Essence Drove Some Mad With Magical Desire

But there was a dangerous downside.

The onslaught of palatable essence was too much for some non-Enchanters to bear. These unfortunate ones lost their wits and developed an unquenchable lust for the magic. They coveted the essence charms. When the charms’ magic went dry, the mad sought the traveling Enchanters and attacked them to get magical essence from the source.

Enchantment Begins in Sye

Necronomicon Enchanter: Evolution of Sole-Source Magic

Within the pages of the Necronomicon Enchanter book in Lita’s library, the curious may learn the Enchanters’ magical matters. Beware, for the knowledge might drive the reader mad with bitter desire and luscious regret. Today we read the first chapter and discover how Enchantment came to the Sye world.

Early Magicians Wanted to Improve Their Enchantments

Early Magicians Wanted to Improve Their Enchantments

Early Sye

Before Enchanters came, Sye’s plants and animals shared their world’s weak and scattered magic.

Early magicians with an interest in improving their spell craft formed a community. They cultivated the plants with the highest concentration of magic and ate the leaves. The magicians became ill from the plant’s raw magic. Many of them left the enclave, but the few that remained experimented with the flora.

Certain spells and physical preparation made the plants palatable for most, but the puny levels had little effect on the magicians’ magical abilities. More mages abandoned the effort until only five men and five women remained: Surat, Cha, Kesdin, Beel, Sahn, Ree, Narkin, Lika, Cinton, and Durme.

The Old Forest Taught the First Enchanters

The Old Forest Taught the First Enchanters

The Magical Chaos Theory

As Sye magicians have learned since then, the Magical Chaos Theory seeks order from the mess of random enchantment.

The turning point for the discouraged magicians came when the trees in the Old Forest in the eastern interior of Sye awoke because of the Magical Chaos Theory. What is now known as the Enchanter’s Ten originated from the ten enclave magicians. They also defined the Enchanter’s Two power number. Its enchantments manifest in the duality between male and female, plus the pairing of mind (causa) and body (soma).

Magical Essence Appears

These early magicians cultivated spells to communicate with the magically sentient trees. In a mutually beneficial exchange, the trees shed magic-rich bark and leaves. The ten mages then followed the trees’ instructions and transformed this enchanted tree detritus into chewy sticks sweetened with wood sap. They called it magical essence, and the ten could eat the concoction without falling ill.

Old Forest’s Influence on the Enclave Magicians Forever Transformed Their Magical Abilities

The Old Forest’s impact on the ten magicians’ magical abilities was profound. Sye’s magic would never again be scattered and weak.

After twenty and five days of eating tree essence, the ten enclave magicians became Sye’s first Enchanters. The Old Forest gave them vast magical power, but unexpected weaknesses threatened to destroy their hard-won enchantments.

Enchanters Pass Magical Essence to Their Partners

Kisses are Magical Hanky-Panky

It's Kiss an Enchanter Day

It’s Kiss an Enchanter Day

February 14th is the official “Kiss an Enchanter Day” here at Lita’s castle. Before we get all distracted with the pleasurable mechanics, let’s talk about the psychology of smooches in Lita’s fantasy world of Sye.

Sye’s magical essence kisses are a cornerstone in Wrath, Tredan’s Bane, and the forthcoming Ghost Orchid. These stories look at the spell casting and political shenanigans of a world where magical power is a commodity.

Intimacy Mind Magic

Consider the kiss, so sweet and full of bliss. On the practical level, kisses fuel the magical hanky-panky for making little wizards.

Kisses Fortify Trust and Passion With a Partner

Kisses Fortify Trust and Passion With a Partner

But on the mind magic (psychology) level, kisses fortify trust and passion with a partner. A kiss mixes touch, smell, and taste to celebrate affection.

A kiss brings another person into our vulnerable personal space and shows we risk catching an infection and losing our heart. The best kisses reassure and inflame us with their magic.

How to Make Magic

Some of Sye’s plants have low levels of essence that animals consume to get their dose of magic. Human magicians who are predisposed to distillation spells ingest the essence-rich flora and generate concentrated magical essence in their bodies. These magic-saturated attractive people are Enchanters, not only in name, but also in their very nature.

Sye's Magical Essence is as Necessary as Salt

Sye’s Magical Essence is as Necessary as Salt

Enchanters distribute their essence using kisses and other less wanton methods. Sye’s people need a dose every day. Think of essence as a magical salt, but much more fun to dispense than with a salt shaker.

Join the Ranks

Sye’s world can be harsh with the Enchanters’ seductive ways, and establishing trusted essence partners is especially important to these affectionate mages. Male Enchanters recruit non-magician confidantes to draw off their extra essence using the Enchanter Kiss spell. In addition to the usual attraction of a willing recipient, the spell endears the receiver by flooding them with untainted magical power.

This deluge releases feel-good magical substances (endorphins). The essence onslaught in an Enchanter Kiss spell also repairs the receiver’s physical, thaumaturgic, and emotional wear-and-tear.

Enchanter Kisses

It's Kiss an Enchanter Day

It’s Kiss an Enchanter Day

Let’s observe Valentine’s Day today and talk about one of Lita’s favorite subjects–Enchanter magical essence kisses.

It’s been some time since Lita has talked about the Enchanters in the Sye world. Here’s a quick recap, then we will get back to magical hanky-panky.

Sye is a world where the Enchanters, Church magicians, and others (called “non-Maji’kers”) live.  The humans, and some sentient magical creatures, use magic (called “essence”) as an energy source for mechanisms that would otherwise use physics or natural laws in other worlds.

The living world of Sye is a separate place from the afterlife, called the Fields of Yalu (or the “city of the dead”).  Ghosts from the Fields of Yalu are regular visitors to Sye. Powerful magicians keep dragonettes as pets. Everyone has a secret name given to them clandestinely by their mothers, which is the source of a person’s magical ability.

Enter the Sye Fantasy World

Lita has visited Sye before, and wrote about her visits with the Enchanters, dragonettes, and ghosts. Here are her Enchanter stories if Gentle Reader has not had time to investigate:

  • Wrath, Prequel to Tredan’s Bane is a short story that starts things off at a run. In Wrath, a retired Enchanter (Tredan) battles a powerful magician to keep a dangerous spell book from falling in to the wrong hands. Read the back cover blurb, watch the short Wrath book trailer, or read Chapter 1.
  • Masked Ghosts Threaten the Enchanters in "Ghost Orchid"

Masked Ghosts Threaten the Enchanters in “Ghost Orchid”

Tredan’s Bane plunges in to the thick of things with Tredan’s wife Lanith, a magical oddities dealer, getting a ghost’s warning, then returning home to find her home on fire and Tredan missing. After enlisting the help of the Enchanters, Lanith finds and hides her kidnapped husband’s dangerous spell book. Read the back cover blurb, watch the Tredan’s Bane book trailer, or read Chapter 1.

  • Ghost Orchid continues Lanith’s adventures, where she investigates crypt murders that release masked ghosts in to the living world who threaten the Enchanters. Read the back cover blurb. Release date for Ghost Orchid is summer of 2014.

Magic Must Make Sense

One of Lita’s pet peeves with some fantasy fiction, especially epic or high fantasy, is how the powerful magicians just wave their hand and bolts of magical energy shoot from their fingertips. Or sometimes it’s the end of the hero’s journey, and he/she has the magic wand/orb/book, and this magical lightweight (at best) use this thingummy to produce the bolts of magical energy.

Balderdash!  Be gone, silly images. Magical energy isn’t that way at all. Here’s the truth–you get magical energy from kissing an Enchanter.

Just like the taste of Enchanter kisses--chocolate, cinnamon & peppery spice

Just like the taste of Enchanter kisses–chocolate, cinnamon & peppery spice

What does magical essence taste like? Chocolate. Cinnamon. Hint of peppery spice.

Only Enchanters can produce the magical power that fuels the Sye world. What would be the life of an Enchanter man (or woman) if some magicians will stop at nothing to control the source of magical power? It’s not all smooches. Some of it is big trouble.

Find out for yourself. Lita suggests that you fix a cup of hot chocolate in a favorite mug, add a dash of cinnamon, and curl up with Wrath and Tredan’s Bane. Oh, and keep your Valentine darling nearby if you want to practice your own magical essence kisses.

The Secret Name is the Key to a Magician's Power

Secret Names are Magical Keys

There’s power in knowing the names of people, objects, and ideas. Secrets also have power. Combine these two elements in a fantasy like Tredan’s Bane, and a Secret Name becomes the key to a wizard’s magic.

How Name Magic Starts

The Secret Name is the closest-kept magic for an individual.  A mother gives it to her newborn at birth and keeps it clandestine between them.  The child’s maturing magical ability intertwines with its Secret Name.

Wedded couples exchange Secret Names as part of consummating their marriage. It signals the beginning of their joint lives and shared magic, reinforced by the Priest’s spells in the couple’s marriage rings.

A person also has a Common name used everyday by family and acquaintances. The world of Sye also stresses guild titles and honorifics, which recognizes a person’s stature in their profession.

Abusing a Secret Name can Break the Ability to Work Spells

Abusing a Secret Name can Break the Ability to Work Spells

Controlling Another Mage

Sharing Secret Names with a non-spouse is risky since it creates a vulnerable relationship between the persons involved. Magicians rarely share Secret Names because it can weaken their magic if entrusted to the wrong person. Abuse of a Secret Name can break a person’s ability to work spells, and in severe cases, harm their ability to use magical essence.

The flip side of this is that a magician gains stability, and usually power, with shared Secret Names.

Lanith "Stream Daughter" (A’edredohr)

Names are Not Made Up

All of the names in Wrath and Tredan’s Bane truly mean what the characters say they mean. The apostrophes are for decoration. For example, “Arnl’jhott” does mean “frightens eagles” for Lanith’s pet dragonette. Here are a few Secret Names for other characters:

  • Lanith “Stream Daughter” (A’edredohr)
  • Nyle “Dweller by the Dark Stream in the Raven Forest” (Daegal’hraefnscaga)
  • Eli “Small Spear of God” (Paavo’asgeir)
  • Abbent “Born in the Summer from the Ocean of Light” (Suma’ila’zara)
  • Penn “Lucky Man from the Church Village” (Wapi’kirkjabyr)
